Yukimasa Ida JAPAN, b. 1990

Overview
Yukimasa Ida was born in Tottori, Japan, and is a contemporary artist based in Tokyo. He earned his MFA in Oil Painting from Tokyo University of the Arts. Ida’s practice is rooted in the Japanese philosophical concept of Ichigo Ichie—’one time, one encounter’—which emphasizes the uniqueness and irreversibility of each moment in time. Through his work, he explores the transient nature of existence and the intensity of lived experience.

Employing thick layers of oil paint, vigorous brushstrokes, and vivid color, Ida captures fleeting sensations, memories, and bodily perceptions on the canvas. His paintings move fluidly between figuration and abstraction, resisting fixed representation in favor of conveying the density of emotion and energy that arises in a single moment. In this sense, painting becomes both a trace of time and a record of action, inviting viewers to engage with the physical and temporal presence embedded within the surface.
Yukimasa Ida expands painting into a site for contemplation on existence and time, continually renewing the material and philosophical possibilities that contemporary painting can embody. He received the Jury’s Special Award at the CAF Award in 2016 and was selected for Forbes Japan 30 Under 30 in 2018, gaining international recognition. He is currently active across Asia, Europe, and the Americas, presenting solo exhibitions and participating in major group exhibitions.
