Tadashi Kawamata: Tree Hut and Destruction

Tadashi Kawamata majored in painting while studying at Tokyo University of the Arts, but he often found himself standing in front of a blank canvas due to an allergy to oil paints. Using the frame of the blank canvas to create installations marked the beginning of his new work.
Tadashi Kawamata conveys social messages through architectural installations made of wood and recycled materials. The artist has a habit of collecting photographs of accident scenes and draws inspiration from the shapes of broken buildings. His exhibitions feature works composed in forms that appear to be already destroyed, resembling ruins.

The Destruction series, which is the title of this exhibition, depicts scenes devastated by war or natural disasters. Its origins trace back to the work Under the Water, created on-site at the Centre Pompidou-Metz in 2016. When the tsunami struck Japan in 2011, Tadashi Kawamata contemplated how he could maintain connections with those suffering in the affected areas. After returning to Paris, he created Under the Water, reflecting the unforgettable images of the disaster. While Under the Water was viewed from a perspective looking upwards, Destruction allows the audience to see the images from a direct frontal view.

Another major theme of the exhibition, Tree Hut, showcases the possibilities of reconstruction, protection, and refuge. These works leave an even stronger impression when displayed alongside the pieces depicting ruins. Tree Hut first appeared in his work in 1998 and have been exhibited at places like the Centre Pompidou in France and in Bonn, Germany. His works are structurally robust yet fragile, characterized by a deliberate ambiguity between construction and deconstruction. Both Destruction series and Tree Hut prompt a reevaluation and consideration of the vulnerability inherent in everyday architectural environments.

Tadashi Kawamata is well-knowned for his installation works that create structures by stacking discarded objects. He places great importance on the site-specificity of his work, selecting materials that best symbolize the location where the work is installed. For example, in Busan in 2010, he saw wooden fish crates piled up at the Jagalchi Market and collected around 3,000 fish crates before the exhibition opened to use as materials for his work. In an exhibition at the Daegu Art Museum, he used apple crates, which are symbolic of Daegu.
Wood, the primary material used by the artist, is ubiquitous, economical, and carries the history of the place. Because the artist values locality, he recruits participants to collaborate on-site for installation work. This cooperation holds the meaning of communication through both physical and conscious participation. Wood is also an easy material for the participants recruited on-site to handle during their collaboration.
