Ahn Chang-Hong Korea, b. 1953

Ahn Chang-Hong was born in 1953 in Miryang, Gyeongsangnam-do, and currently lives and works in Yangpyeong. He has held approximately 50 solo exhibitions at major venues including Gana Art Center, Savina Museum of Contemporary Art, and Busan Museum of Modern Art. He has also actively participated in numerous group exhibitions at art venues such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), Seoul Museum of Art, and Daegu Art Museum.

Ahn Changhong’s artworks consist of multilayered strata of creativity that traverse historical insight and personal fantasy. After his early oil paintings, which were dominated by blue tones until the 1970s, he began to reveal his unique artistic identity in the late 1979 with series such as <After Human Being> and <Family Portrait>. Through elements like the removal of eyes as a proof of absence and suggestions of death that overshadow familial harmony, he strongly expressed a pessimistic and bleak worldview. In the early 1980s, he presented <Dangerous Play> series, which depicted ritualistic acts reminiscent of a satanic world. From the mid-1980s to the early 1990s, he introduced <Bird> series, portraying tragic endings and suffering, using a variety of expressive formats including painting, drawing, and object collage—showcasing a versatility in artistic expression.

He created a condensed world that reflects the spirit of the times and prevailing social conditions. This sensibility is particularly evident in series such as <Face> and <Human>. These works employ diverse formats—such as terracotta reliefs, paper objects, wood carvings, drawings, and object collages—revealing a fluid form and rich imagination.

His artistic achievements have been recognized both in Korea and abroad. He received the Juror Special Prize at the 1989 Cagnes International Painting Festival in France, and was honored with the prestigious Lee Jung-Seob Award in 2013. His works are now part of major public collections, including those of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Seoul Museum of Art, and the Busan Museum of Modern Art, thereby firmly establishing himself as one of the leading figures in contemporary Korean art.
